Reassessment Procedures for Grades 6-8 Core Classes
One of our primary goals at Bristol School is to support all students’ successful learning of rigorous grade-level content. We understand that learning is a process - it takes time and practice to master the content. Sometimes, students have not fully mastered the learning by the time of an assessment. We believe that students should have an opportunity to be reassessed on standards on which they were not originally successful.
To increase consistency and maintain high expectations for our students, we have put in place procedures for reassessing student learning and established a shared definition for reassessment. Right now, these procedures apply to only core classes in grades 6-8.
Clarification of Reassessment Definition
Reassessment does not simply mean retaking a test - reassessment can include:
- Completing an assessment (either whole or partial) that has the same content but different prompts
- Correcting parts of the original assessment and reflecting on changes
- Engaging in an alternative assessment
Reassessment Procedures
- Any student who wants to be reassessed on standards not initially mastered has the option to do so
- The reassessment must take place within ten school days of the return of the original assessment to the class
- Any assessments given at the end of a trimester will be graded in the next trimester to allow for the ten day reassessment
- Students shall receive full credit for reassessed items
Reassessment is not automatic - students must request a reassessment and ensure that they have completed the necessary steps for reassessment. Due to differences in content and modes of assessment, this will vary slightly from teacher to teacher. In most cases, students will be expected to engage in the Three R’s:
- Reflect: How did they prepare for the first assessment? What will they do differently to better prepare this time?
- Relearn: Ensure that practice assignments and homework has been completed and any notes have been reviewed
- Reassess: Schedule a time with the teacher to be reassessed
Reassessment will likely occur outside of typical class time (during advisory, recess, lunch, and/or after school).
